Message from the Curator

Welcome to the Pensacola Historical Museum. The Museum has been a part of downtown Pensacola for over thirty years. In that time, the Museum has moved from Old Christ Church to the Arbona Building. Many visitors who remember coming into the Museum in Old Christ Church bring their younger generations to the new Museum in the Arbona Building. The Museum houses two floors of exhibit space. The first floor is dedicated to our changing exhibits. These exhibits are changed every four to six months. The second floor of the Museum houses our permanent galleries. These include: Army/Navy Gallery, Maritime Gallery, Multicultural Gallery, Native American Gallery, and Forts/Civil War Gallery. The Museum also has a Museum Store full of those hard to find local publications.

I hope that everyone who comes into the Museum sees how history is alive in Pensacola.

History of the Museum

The Pensacola Historical Society opened their first museum in the Dorothy Walton House. This early Museum displayed T. T. Wentworth's collection of local artifacts. World War II closed the Museum, but not the desire of the Pensacola Historical Society to have a Museum of local history. In 1960 the Society opened their Museum in Old Christ Church where it flourished for thirty years before moving into the Arbona Building on Zaragoza Street. The Arbona Building built circa 1886 offered the Museum two exhibit floors with room for a Museum Store, and brought the Museum closer to the Resource Center in the Norman Simons Building in the old Beacon Building on Church Street.
